Verruca (also know as a plantar wart) occur on the sole or toes of the foot. Verruca spread easily and are often uncomfortable to stand on. It is always recommended that a full diagnosis is obtained before any treatment is undertaken as sometimes they can be mistaken for other skin lesions.
Treatment of verruca is different for every patient as all treatments are endeavouring to elicit an inflammatory response within the hosts immune system. Verrucas are notoriously persistent affecting 7–12% of the population and are most common in children.
Microscopic breaks in the skin allows the virus to occupy the outer layers of the skin (epidermis). Whilst a the HPV strains responsible for verruca is a natural skin commensal on a high percentage of the population, they can often be passed on from infected people via floor surfaces of communal changing areas and swimming pools for example.
